Washington, DC -- Today, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who testified before the committee on Oversight and Government Reform, was called to task about the impact of corruption, mismanagement and lack of oversight on the U.S. mission in Iraq.
During today’s hearing Congressman Sarbanes asked if Secretary Rice had any regrets about the Department’s inadequate oversight over government contractors like Blackwater. The purpose of the hearing was to determine to the degree to which this lack of oversight, and more generally corruption within the Iraqi government, are affecting diplomatic and political progress in Iraq.
“As a member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, I have participated in numerous hearings to examine Blackwater and corruption in the Iraqi ministries,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “Today’s hearing raised important questions about whether the State Department is capable of performing its core mission of reaching a political solution without first resolving corruption and the problem of its run away contractors.
