CONGRESSMAN JOHN SARBANES AWARDS THE ARBUTUS VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT $27,000

November 1, 2007

Washington, DC -- Today, Congressman Sarbanes awarded the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department. The $27,000 grant will provide the department with increased funding for staffing, recruitment, training and equipment.

“Firefighters risk their lives everyday with insufficient staffing, inadequate training and obsolete equipment,” said Congressman John Sarbanes. “It is my honor to assist the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department by awarding them the AFG Grant. Congress has an obligation to provide firefighters with the necessary resources to perform their jobs.”

AFG Grants provide funding to career and volunteer fire departments across the country. These funds give departments the necessary resources to hire new firefighters and to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters. This program is critical to thousands of fire stations across the nation.
