SARBANES, MIKULSKI AND CARDIN SECURE $1.1 MILLION TO REPAIR SINKHOLES AT GLENWOOD APARTMENTS

April 25, 2008

Washington, DC -- At the urging of Congressman John Sarbanes, Senator Barbara Mikulski and Senator Benjamin L. Cardin, in a joint letter, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today agreed to release $1.1 million in emergency capital funds for repair of the sinkholes that have developed at Glenwood Apartments in Annapolis. The release of these funds follows ongoing conversations with HUD by Congressman Sarbanes, including a recent call to the Acting Secretary.

Originally prompted by a letter from an Annapolis constituent, Congressman Sarbanes wrote to HUD in January to inquire about funding to repair the multiplying and expanding sinkholes at the living facility for seniors and persons with special needs. HUD’s own engineers determined that the sinkholes impair emergency response capabilities and pose a serious risk to the building’s structure.

“This is about people feeling safe where they live; anyone who sees the sinkholes firsthand can tell that they present an emergency situation,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “I am pleased that HUD has recognized the need to release the funds so that the Glenwood community can have some peace of mind.  Now we hope the City of Annapolis and the County can work with HUD to quickly mitigate the danger and stop additional damage.”

"We heard from the Annapolis Housing Authority that these sinkholes pose a serious threat to providing emergency services to people in need at the Glenwood Apartments," said Senator Mikulski. "I am pleased that HUD has taken the appropriate responsibility for this issue, and has provided the necessary funding to resolve this quickly."

“I am extremely pleased that HUD has agreed that the sinkhole near the Glenwood Apartments is an emergency situation that requires immediate action,” said Senator Cardin.  “It is important that the sinkholes be repaired as soon as possible for the safety of the residents of Glenwood.”

“For the elderly and people with disabilities who live here, HUD and your housing authority are committed to doing what’s necessary to ensure your home and the surrounding community are safe and secure,” said HUD Deputy Secretary Roy Bernardi.
