Washington, DC -- Yesterday, Congressman Sarbanes voted with 272 of his colleagues to override President Bush’s veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. Unfortunately, the vote fell short by 13 votes (273 yes - 156 no). 286 votes were needed to override.
In a statement he asserted that the effort to provide adequate health insurance for American children is far from over. "We're going to continue to fight for this country's children. The President's intransigence represents another thumb in the eye for families who work hard and play by the rules to get ahead, but find themselves one hospital visit away from a dire financial situation.
The veto represents a willful disregard of our nation's values and our society's moral imperatives. It's unconscionable to stand by and continue to allow 10 million children to go without health benefits. But we're not going to yield until every child has the opportunity to have adequate health care."
