CONGRESSMAN SARBANES NAMED TO INFLUENTIAL HOUSE NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE

Sarbanes will tackle global warming by pushing for a return to natural temperature control and Chesapeake Bay conservation

January 9, 2007

Washington, DC --  Amid intense competition, U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-03) today secured a seat on the powerful House Natural Resources Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Natural Resources Committee has jurisdiction over Fisheries & Wildlife, Natural Parks, Mining activity and Costal Zone Management.

“I’m thrilled to learn about this assignment. I have an unwavering commitment to stopping and reversing the process of global warming and I believe the work of this committee will be critical in that movement, starting with the Bay,” said Sarbanes.

As a member of the Committee, Sarbanes plans to work closely with Chairman Rahall to decrease the environmental impact of human activity in the mid-Atlantic states on the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. “Marylanders are privileged to call the Chesapeake Bay home where we have all the knowledge and innovation needed to stop the deterioration of our water quality, shores and ecosystems. It’s a matter of collaboration and focus. I’m confident that the Natural Resources Committee will provide the catalyst for that success.”

Rep. Rahall (D-WV) will chair the committee, and Rep. Young (R-AK) will serve as the ranking Republican member on the committee. Chairmen Rahall stated, “I am pleased to welcome Mr. Sarbanes as a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources.  This committee has a tremendous responsibility over matters that enrich our nation and all of its inhabitants – including public lands and forests, and fish and wildlife – and I look forward to working with Mr. Sarbanes and other Members of the Committee on bringing new ideas to the table to fulfill this important role.”
