CONGRESSMAN SARBANES’ THIRD ASSIGNMENT- OVERSIGHT AND GOVERNMENT REFORM COMMITTEE

Sarbanes well positioned to serve Maryland federal employees.

January 11, 2007

Washington, DC --  U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-03) was assigned a third committee seat today. Adding the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to his legislative responsibilities on the Committee on Education and Labor and the Committee on Natural Resources, Sarbanes will also engage in oversight of the management of Executive agencies and federal contracts.
“I realize that serving on these three committees is a tremendous responsibility. It is a challenge that I am honored to take on.”

As a member of the Committee, Sarbanes plans to work closely with Chairman Waxman to provide oversight to the Bush Administration’s activities. Sarbanes stated, “For six years, the Administration has operated without any check from Congress. The result has been the increasingly ineffective operation of important federal programs and wasteful spending of taxpayer money.”

Rep. Waxman (D-CA) will chair the committee, and Rep. Davis (R-VA) will serve as the ranking Republican member on the committee.

Chairman Waxman stated, “I am delighted that the leadership appointed John Sarbanes to the Committee. His experience and abilities will be invaluable as we deal with the important challenges facing us in the next year.” Speaker Pelosi is responsible for assigning Members of Congress to committees based on their district or particular interests

“Maryland’s Third District is home to many federal employees and I know Congressman Sarbanes will serve them well as a new member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.  “His honesty and integrity make this assignment a natural fit.”
