Congressman Cummings Announces $67.7 Million in Funding to 7th Congressional District Public Schools

Washington, DCToday, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (Md.-7) announced that approximately $67.7 million in emergency education funding has been released for schools in the 7th Congressional District to help save jobs and maintain programs for low-income students and students with disabilities. The funding is part of $26.5 billion in funding announced today for Title I and IDEA programs nationwide.

“Education is a right, not a luxury, and it is critical that our schools have the funding necessary to ensure that every child—regardless of income level or physical abilities—has an equal opportunity to access a quality education,” Congressman Cummings said. “The emergency funding announced today will remove one more roadblock to our children’s futures.”

Nationwide, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides $13 billion in Title I funds, which help low-income students, and $13.5 billion in IDEA funds, which help students with disabilities. The funding announced today is the first of two installments of direct funding for Title I and IDEA programs that school districts will receive under the Recovery Act. The second installment will be released this fall.

In the 7th Congressional District, the funding announced today will be distributed as follows, according to estimates from the Department of Education and Congressional Research Service:
  • Baltimore City Public School System: $27.1 million for Title I, $14.5 million for IDEA
  • Baltimore County Public School System: $8.7 million for Title I, $12.6 million for IDEA
  • Howard County Public Schools: $4.8 million for IDEA

“Every day, Marylanders reap the benefits of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act—whether through job creation, transportation projects, or increased funding to aid our ailing schools,” Congressman Cummings said. “I have no doubt that this piece of President Obama’s plan to jumpstart our economy will be successful.”
