Washington, D.C.— Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) released the following statement in response to the death of Michael Jackson:
“No one can deny the significant contributions Michael Jackson made to our popular culture. He changed the face of music forever. Michael Jackson was more than just a popular icon, though. This is a man who pursued excellence throughout his professional life, taking his career to levels that amazed and inspired millions of people worldwide.
“I can remember the sense of pride my classmates and I felt in high school when the Jackson 5 first came on stage. To see this family of such talented young people rise from the inner city to the national scene gave so many of us a sense of hope about what we could achieve ourselves. As Michael continued to progress through his career, his exceptional talent continued to have a lasting impact.
“What this great man brought to our world will stay with us for generations to come. He is an inspiration who will truly be missed, and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones.”
