WASHINGTON – Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) announced that one young person from his district will be selected to study in Washington, DC and work for the U.S. House of Representatives this fall through the U.S. House of Representatives’ Democratic Page Program.
“This is an exceptional opportunity for a student from the 1st congressional district to gain a unique understanding of Congress,” Stupak said. “I look forward to hearing from outstanding candidates from across northern Michigan.”
Through the Page Program, high school juniors spend a semester studying in Washington and working for the House. The fall program begins September 3, 2006 and ends on January 26, 2007. Stupak said one applicant will be selected from his district. Pages receive a stipend for their work and continue their high school studies during the program.
To be eligible, the young person must be in their junior year of high school, be at least sixteen years of age prior to the start of the program, be a U.S. citizen and have a 3.0 Grade Point Average in core subjects. Eligible students may download application information from www.house.gov/stupak.
Along with the standard documentation, Stupak said applicants should submit to his office three letters of recommendation from references such as teachers, school administrators, clergy, local officials, coaches, mentors, or employers. Applications must be faxed back to Stupak’s office at 202-225-4744 by June 14th, 2006.
Pages have served the U.S. House for over 200 years. The Pages Program is overseen by the Clerk of the House. Members of the U.S. House are periodically selected to sponsor a Page from their district for a semester.
