WASHINGTON – Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) released the following statement regarding reports that the Coast Guard has terminated its live-fire exercises on the Great Lakes:

“I have always said that, while it is critical that the Coast Guard be well prepared for all homeland security threats, it is also important that the public’s concerns be taken into account before the Coast Guard conducts live fire exercises.  That is why I helped secure a public meeting with the Coast Guard in Charlevoix and worked with Congressman Obey to pass as part of the Homeland Security appropriations bill language requiring the Coast Guard to provide enhanced public notification before conducting any live-fire exercises.

“The news that the Coast Guard has now withdrawn its live-fire training program in the Great Lakes is good news for the people of northern Michigan and for all residents of the Great Lakes region.  It is especially reassuring that the Coast Guard acknowledged the concerns my constituents and I raised at the Charlevoix public meeting.  Specifically, the Coast Guard noted the placement of the live-fire zones, the need for proper public notification and the possible use of environmentally friendly ammunition as matters that cannot be overlooked.

“Our Great Lakes are a national treasure that we have a duty to preserve and protect.  I will continue working with the Coast Guard to ensure that their training needs are met, but in a way that does not threaten the Great Lakes or the safety of those who use them for recreation or commerce.  While the Coast Guard’s process at first ignored public concerns, I am pleased that the Coast Guard ultimately decided to take into account the public’s views.”
