Conyers Announces Department of Transportation Funding Grants For Detroit and Downriver

Washington D.C. - Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), Dean of the Congressional Black Caucus, and ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, announced today that he has secured two grants for the 14th Congressional District. Conyers made the following remarks:

"I am happy to announce that we have secured two major grants for projects vital to Southeast Michigan. I want to thank the Department of Transportation for working with me to improve our region's transportation network.

"The first grant, in the amount of $215,995 will fund improvements in Southeast Michigan's AMBER Alert strategic plan. The AMBER Alert is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies and broadcasters to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases. This grant will serve to improve communications between agencies and broadcasters, as well as incorporate our region's electronic highway billboards into the plan. These billboards, typically used to disseminate traffic information to drivers, will alert the public of abducted children, displaying pertinent information about the child, abductor or suspected vehicle that drivers might look for on highways.

"The second grant, of $231,957 will fund a study to look at options for replacing the Trenton River Channel Bridge. This bridge serves as a vital link between Trenton and Grosse Ile, handling over 20,000 vehicles a day. The current bridge is beginning to show its age as and reach its maximum capacity. Its time to look into our option for replacement"
