Washington, DC - "Today, after two years of political hand-wringing, we finally passed a six-year reauthorization of the federal surface transportation programs. The passage of the $283.9 billion dollar program represents a major step forward for Michigan, Detroit, and the Downriver Communities."
TEA-LU, as passed by the House, includes seven Conyers-sponsored projects totaling $21.5 million dollars. These projects are:
· $7.5 million to replace buses in the city of Detroit
· $4.5 million to build a bus maintenance facility in the city of Detroit
· $4 million to study and determine replacement options for the Trenton ChannelBridge
· $2 million to construct a railroad grade separation on Fort Street north of Van Horn Road, Trenton, County of Wayne
· $1.5 million to Ford museum
· $1 million to Wyoming Ave. reconstruction from Eagle Pass to Michigan Avenue under a railroad bridge
· $1 million to repair M-10 corridor from I-696 to downtown Detroit
Statistics show that for every 1 billion in highway spending creates an estimated 47,500 jobs which further reiterates the importance of this legislation. The last highway bill expired in September 2003, since then, the Congress has passed numerous extensions to continue highway improvements. The current extension expires May 31.
