Washington, DC - After introducing H. Con. Res. 393, a resolution honoring African Americans in the Armed Services, Congressman John Conyers, Jr. said the following:
"Yesterday, I was so pleased to introduce H. Con. Res. 393, honoring the millions of African Americans who have served in the Armed Forces. Since Crispus Attucks, a run-away slave who was the first casualty of the American Revolutionary War, to today's brave men and women fighting in Iraq, their service has been inspirational. I felt that it was due time for Congress to recognize the perseverance of African Americans in the military.
While I do not support the war in Iraq, I continue to support our brave troops fighting overseas. I am saddened by the loss of over 2,500 United States service members, more than 260 of whom were African American.
In the face of racial segregation and discrimination, African Americans have demonstrated courage, competence, skill, and devotion in their service to the country. This distinguished service has helped bridge the racial divide in the United States. It is my hope that H. Con. Res. 393 will bring the tremendous service and sacrifice of African Americans in the military to the forefront of this country's discourse and debate."
