CONGRESSMAN CLEAVER TO COMMEMORATE THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF KATRINA TODAY

Cleaver to review preparedness plans, thank volunteers and screen a movie on global warming to commemorate the day Katrina made landfall
 

Kansas City, MO—Today, on the first anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina making landfall, Congressman Cleaver will remember those were lost, examine lessons learned, and prepare for the future. 

At 2:00 p.m. Congressman Cleaver (MO-5) will join Congressman Moore (KS-3) for a briefing by the region’s emergency planners at the Overland Park Emergency Operations Center, 12401 Hemlock, Overland Park. The briefing will focus on regional preparedness and planning efforts, terrorism deterrence programs, communication interoperability, and public heath preparedness and precautions.

Congressman Cleaver, at 6:00 p.m., will thank local volunteers and talk with survivors at the "Home is Where the Heart Is: Hope and Healing for Hurricane Katrina Evacuees, Family and Friends” event at 6 p.m. at Parade Park behind the Gregg Community Center at 1600 E. 17th Terrace. The event is sponsored by The Salvation Army, Community Christian Church, The Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Storytellers Inc. - Artist Collective, the Art Therapy Internship Program at Emporia State University, Big Brothers-Big Sisters and KPRS/KPRT Radio Stations.
 
At 7:30 p.m. Cleaver will end the evening in the Grant Hall Theater on the UMKC campus, 5228 Charlotte, where he will host and introduce the new movie “The Great Warming” to students and community members. The movie focuses on the effect global warming is having on our planet, including an increased number of dangerous hurricanes. The Congressman is proud to Co-Host the movie with the Campus Greens, the Student Government Association, and the African American Student Union. This will be the first time the movie, narrated by Alanis Morissette and Keanu Reeves, will be seen in the Greater Kansas City Area. A flyer for the event can be found here >>.
