Legislation Introduced to Designate Region as Kansas City Animal Health Corridor

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Dennis Moore (Kansas – Third District) and Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (Kansas – Second District) announced Tuesday the introduction of a resolution, H.Res. 317, recognizing the region from Manhattan, Kansas, to Columbia, Missouri, as the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor.  This resolution is currently awaiting consideration by the House Committee on Agriculture.

“I am proud to introduce this legislation with my colleague, Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins, and other members of the Kansas and Missouri congressional delegation, in support of designating the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor.” Moore said.  “This area provides not only scientific innovation in animal sciences, but also the foundation for long-term economic growth in Kansas and Missouri.  The biosciences industry will continue to be an academic and technological leader in both states for years to come.”

“Since the days of cattle drives in the 1800’s to the construction of the state-of-the-art National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, our region has a long tradition of being a leader in the livestock industry,” Jenkins said. “I am proud to join with Congressmen Moore and Moran and members from Missouri to recognize the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor. I look forward to supporting the regions’ universities and the bioscience industry to ensure the Animal Health Corridor continues to be on the forefront of animal health both here at home and around the world.”

Joerg Ohle, Chair of the Animal Health Corridor Advisory Board, praised the cooperative effort to distinguish this region: “We thank Congressman Moore and the cosponsors for recognizing the significance of the Animal Health assets in the greater Kansas City region.”

H. Res 317 is also co-sponsored by Rep. Ike Skelton (Missouri – Fourth District), Rep. Jerry Moran (Kansas – First District), Rep. Sam Graves (Missouri – Sixth District) and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, II (Missouri – Fifth District).

This bipartisan, bi-state coalition of members has already expressed their strong support for H.Res. 317, saying:

Congressman Ike Skelton (Missouri – Fourth District) - “The livestock business is very important to Missouri’s economy and particularly to the Fourth District.  It is my hope that the designation of the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor will help to benefit and foster growth for the industry.”

Congressman Jerry Moran (Kansas – First District) - “This area has long been considered our country’s headquarters for animal science. Distinguishing the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor will attract even more bioscience interests into Kansas and Missouri and provide an opportunity for our best and brightest young people to stay and work.”

Congressman Sam Graves (Missouri – Sixth District)- “I am pleased to join my colleagues from Kansas and Missouri in recognizing our expanding bio-science industry.  Not only are these businesses providing new and innovative research, but they are creating good paying jobs right here in our region.  This bi-state and bi-partisan support will only help to attract more businesses and more jobs to our area.”

Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II (Missouri – Fifth District) - "Kansas City Animal Health Corridor is all about leveraging partnerships and the delegation supporting it is a perfect example of the sort of diverse group an idea like this can pull together.  I am proud to support the opportunities for high-paying jobs the Corridor represents.  This is a great idea done very well."
