(Washington, D.C) U.S. Congressman Sam Graves and U.S. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II announced today that they had secured $3 million for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. The funding will be used for critical upgrades to infrastructure and facilities.
“This facility is critical to our nation’s defense,” said Graves. “We need to continue to upgrade the facilities so that we can keep pace with our needs. The men and women of the Lake City plant are hard-working individuals who are contributing to our national defense.”
Cleaver agreed.
"The men and women who work at Lake City have a history of serving our troops in time of war. As in the past, the nation looks to our community to supply our troops with the equipment they need to prevail in this conflict. In a time when good paying manufacturing jobs are hard to find, this contract is a strong investment in our local economy," said Cleaver.
The funding was requested by both Congressmen and was included in the Defense Appropriations bill that passed the House of Representatives late Saturday. The bill will now go to the United States Senate and would need to be signed by the President before becoming law.
Lake City Army Ammunition Plant is the only large-scale small caliber ammunition plant providing 5.56mm, 7.62mm, and Cal. 50 ammunition used by the Department of Defense. The FY2008 budget also includes $52.6M to continue production machinery replacement and upgrades at the facility.
