WASHINGTON, DC - Small Business Committee Ranking Member Sam Graves issued this statement today about the Obama Administration’s announcement on small business:
“Small businesses create 7 out of every 10 jobs in this country and will play a vital role in our economic recovery. I agree with the President about the need to unlock credit for small businesses, but it is just one part of helping small businesses get back on track.
If the Obama Administration really wants to help small businesses, then it should stop punishing them. The President’s budget proposed raising taxes on the millions of small business owners who file as individuals.
The President’s allies have introduced legislation called ‘card check’ that would make it easier for small businesses to become unionized. This would devastate many small business owners who are just trying to make ends meet.
Having a group of people who have never had a small business propose solutions is like having your physical education teacher teach economics. We have to understand the problem first. Higher taxes hurt small businesses.
We need to stop penalizing small businesses with tax increases and legislation like card check. You cannot hold a photo op one day about how much you want to help small businesses and then propose legislation the next day that devastates their bottom line.”
