(Washington, D.C.) U.S. Congressman Sam Graves issued the following statement regarding the President’s Address to Congress.
“We can accomplish meaningful health insurance reform this year, but only if we work in a bi-partisan way. Let’s hit the reset button and work on a better plan. This bill is the wrong solution to the wrong problem.
The President is dead wrong on the need for a public option. I held 23 town halls during the August recess and it is clear to me that Missourians do not want federal bureaucrats in charge of their health care. The President and Congress are not listening to the American people when they push this plan.
It is time to look at new ideas. The Chairwoman of the Small Business Committee, Nydia Velázquez and I have a bi-partisan bill that would help small business pool together and buy health insurance as one big company instead of many small ones. Over half of the uninsured are small business owners, their employees or their dependents. We can do this at just a fraction of the cost of Nancy Pelosi’s bill.
Medical Malpractice reform is important. I want Doctors to practice medicine instead of trying to avoid lawsuits. We shouldn’t put trial lawyers ahead of the needs of doctors, patients and small businesses. That shouldn’t be a negotiation tactic; we need to get it done.
This issue is too important for a partisan solution, we need an American solution. I hope the Speaker and the President are truly willing to work toward a bi-partisan bill.”
