(Washington, D.C) U.S. Congressman Sam Graves voted to override President George Bush’s veto today on H.R. 1495, the Water Resource Development Act (WRDA). The bill provides critical infrastructure funding for water projects throughout Missouri and is essential for farmers and businesses to move their product to market. WRDA also addresses issues such as environmental restoration, port modernization, flood control, hurricane protection, water supply and irrigation.
“This legislation is important for Missouri’s economy, and to our river system throughout the upper Midwest,” said Graves. “We need to start addressing these projects without delay.”
WRDA is traditionally reauthorized every two years, but it has not been reauthorized since 2000. It contains several projects important to the Sixth Congressional District. Including:
1. Rush Creek, Parkville.
2. Middle Fork, Grand River, Gentry County.
3. Smithville Lake.
4. Blacksnake Creek Basin, St. Joseph.
5. Missouri and Middle Mississippi Rivers Enhancement Project
6. Platte River, Platte City.
“The Sixth Congressional District is partially bordered by rivers,” said Graves. “This bill is necessary and long overdue.”
H.R. 1495 will now head to the Senate for a Veto override vote. If the Senate overrides the veto, the bill will become law.
