Emerson to Start National Day of Prayer with Prayer Group in U.S. House  – March 19, 2010
WASHINGTON   –  U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) will begin her day in the U.S. House of Representatives this Thursday like she begins every Thursday when Congress is in session: with her prayer group.  Unlike other weeks, however, this Thursday, May 6th, marks the National Day of Prayer.

“The National Day of Prayer makes an important connection between the articles of faith and our civic obligation as good citizens – to help our neighbors in need, to work to make our communities stronger, and to give our time to charitable causes.  Taking time this Thursday to reflect on the blessings of our nation, even when America faces many serious challenges, gives us a chance to set our priorities, seek spiritual guidance, and practice some humility – just like our Founders did centuries ago,” Emerson said.  “I’ll begin my day on Thursday with our weekly prayer breakfast in the House of Representatives, glad to know that the same types of events are happening back home in Southern Missouri.”

The House Prayer Breakfast is a weekly meeting open to members of Congress on both sides of the aisle for prayer and fellowship.

“The prayer breakfast is a longstanding tradition, just like the practice of beginning each day the House of Representatives is in session with a prayer from our Chaplain,” Emerson said.  “Articles of faith are very important to the history and the foundation of our democracy, and I think it is appropriate to remember that part of our national heritage, especially on our National Day of Prayer,” Emerson said.

Throughout the nation on May 6th, religious organizations of all faiths will hold events celebrating a National Day of Prayer, which Emerson says is an important civic occasion.

“With so much happening in our lives at great speed today – family obligations, technology, a 24-hour media cycle and difficult economic pressures – there is a temptation to withdraw which leaves many Americans feeling alone.  Our National Day of Prayer offers a great chance to fellowship and to renew our connections to one another as we practice our faiths,” Emerson said.  “To do that as a nation is quite impressive, and I know our local Missouri communities will see a great response to the National Day of Prayer events we have planned.”

Emerson is also a member of the Congressional Prayer Caucus.
