Emerson Backs Missouri Disaster Request  – May 6, 2011
WASHINGTON   –  U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) this morning sent a letter of support for the formal Request for Disaster Assistance made by Governor Nixon yesterday.  Emerson’s letter cites devastating floods, widespread damage, and extreme disruption to the lives and economy of the region.

“A federal disaster declaration will provide some peace of mind to the people who have lost homes and property, to businesses which have lost buildings and productivity, and to agricultural operations which have lost farmland and equipment,” Emerson said.  “Some 440 road closures in our state have presented an immense challenge to commerce.  The activation of emergency relief and loan programs is crucial for our families and businesses to get back on their feet.”

The text of Emerson’s letter follows:

The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW
Washington, DC 20502

Dear Mr. President:

Over the last two weeks, large portions of Missouri have experienced record flooding and my constituents are suffering.  You have received a letter from Governor Nixon requesting major disaster assistance.  I strongly support this request, and I ask for your swift response.

Our first responders and citizens are working around the clock to assess the full effect of this massive storm, tornadoes, and flooding.  Hundreds of my constituents have fled their homes, schools and businesses in search of dry land.  With the continuing rainfall throughout my district, the floodwaters continue to rise.  In the last two weeks, Missouri’s Department of Transportation reported 440 flood-related road closures. The Governor is requesting Individual Assistance for 29 counties and Public Assistance for 38 counties. This historic flooding throughout my district will felt by generations of farmers, families and businesses.

On behalf of my constituents, I ask that prompt attention and resources by provided to Missouri while we rebuild from this massive disaster.

                                                 Sincerely,

                                           JO ANN EMERSON
                                         Member of Congress
