WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) today expressed her approval for the transfer of sovereignty to the new Iraqi Governing Council in Baghdad.
“Even though it is a few days sooner than anticipated, the transfer of sovereignty marks a great day for the Iraqi people. In a little over a year, Iraq has made a remarkable transition,” Emerson said. “Iraq will surely encounter more challenges in the transition to representative government, but today marks a huge step forward. A little more than a year ago, Iraq was governed by a genocidal dictator. Today, it is governed by the people.
“America set a deadline for this event and exceeded it. We are sending a signal to the world that our goal in Iraq is not gain – it is good. The stability of Iraq and the Middle East are primary objectives in the war on terrorism. Self-government is critical to the mission, and this is a very good day for a free Iraq.”
U.S. troops will remain in Iraq and continue to provide security, as well as continue reconstruction and humanitarian missions.
“While the transfer of sovereignty doesn’t mean our troops are coming home tomorrow, today still marks an important date for our men and women in uniform. As representative government takes root, more and more of our troops’ duties will be passed to the Iraqis. I am looking forward to seeing Missouri’s reservists and National Guard home again,” Emerson said. |
