WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) was today sworn in to the 109th Congress as the Representative from Southern Missouri’s Eighth Congressional District by Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert. Today marks the beginning of Emerson’s fifth full term in office.
“I am incredibly honored to serve our district for the next two years, and I am returning to Washington with some important priorities and resolutions,” Emerson said. “I want to see more of our Southern Missouri values reflected in Congress – civility, service, and a spirit of cooperation. The issues addressed by the 109th Congress will have long-term ramifications for our nation.”
Emerson, who has been active in the past on agriculture, health care, and homeland security, will again lead on those issues in the House of Representatives.
“Congress has a continuing responsibility to secure basic rights for the American people, such as national security and access to quality health care. Keeping our rural economy strong by adding jobs, investing in infrastructure and education, and providing new opportunities is a vital mission for Congress. We need strong representation for our farmers, ranchers, and producers, who have never been more important to health in America and around the world. These are major priorities for me in the year ahead,” Emerson said.
In the 109th Congress, Emerson will retain her seat on the influential House Appropriations Committee where she serves on the Agriculture, Energy & Water, and Homeland Security subcommittees.
