WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) today announced significant progress in her effort to restore operations at the Millersville post office. Mail service had been run out of a local convenience store after the post office’s lease expired.
“I've been working on the Millersville post office situation for over a month now. Yesterday, I saw the vacated modular post office and toured the site in Millersville, and today I am proud to announce that the postal facility will reopen in Millersville in two weeks at the most,” Emerson said. “According to Mr. Sylvester Black, Western Area Vice President of the USPS in Denver, the site for the post office will be next to the Millersville fire station for now, and that may become the permanent solution. We need to finalize the situation so the residents of the Millersville area can pick up their mail from the same location every day.”
Emerson is also the sponsor of a resolution, H. Con. Res. 22, in the U.S. House of Representatives to prevent closure and consolidation in order to keep rural post offices open and operating.
“Post offices are very important institutions in our rural communities. The suspension of the Millersville post office created a lot of inconvenience and uncertainty, which I am glad have been resolved. As we move forward, I feel we finally have reached the point where we can work with officials at the USPS. Mr. Black has been a great help. I'm grateful for community leaders in Millersville who have pressed this issue. I look forward to working with them and counting on their support as we resolve this matter for good,” Emerson said. |
