WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) tomorrow will tour the Mark Twain School in Taney County from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. CDT.
“Rural schools are the bedrock of education that makes our rural communities great places to live, work and visit. I look forward to visiting the Mark Twain School and meeting the faculty and staff who dedicate themselves to the students there,” Emerson said.
Emerson opposed a proposal in the FY 2007 federal budget to sell off parcels of the Mark Twain National Forest to fund a national rural schools program.
“In the end, our Southern Missouri schools would have seen about ten cents on the dollar for each acre of forest land sold. The distribution formula for this money was simply not fair to us.
In Congress, I am fighting for a solution that will get our rural and federally-impacted schools the federal support they deserve – not a one-time infusion of funds that would sap the valuable natural resources of our region,” Emerson said.
