Emerson Issues Statement on Economic Stimulus Compromise

WASHINGTON   –  U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) today commented on the potential good that can be done by a compromise economic stimulus plan agreed upon by the president and congressional leaders.

“It’s refreshing to see partisan politics set aside for the greater good, and this package will be a shot in the arm for our economy,” Emerson said.  “In Southern Missouri, this measure can spur growth and ease the strain on family budgets.  Quick passage of a stimulus package, however, is essential to achieve the maximum effect.  We need to maintain focus on Main Street rather than just worrying about Wall Street.”

The boost would be provided by a tax rebate of between $300 and $1,200 to filing taxpayers earning under $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for married couples filing jointly.  Emerson cautioned that Congress must work to grow the economy over the long term as well.

“I will continue to advocate for policies that target long-term growth in addition to short-term stimulus,” Emerson said.  “Taxpayers deserve reform of a bloated and burdensome system, and we need to make sure that the money we send to the Treasury is responsibly spent by our government.  We also have to be aggressive in a global economy that demands the best of what a talented, innovative American workforce has to offer.”

A final economic stimulus package for congressional approval should be ready for consideration in the next week.
