Rehberg Secures $600,000 for MONTS Juvenile Justice System
Congressman’s Position on House Appropriations Committee Results in $2,492,000 in Funding for Montana Projects
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Montana’s Congressman, Denny Rehberg today announced almost $2.5 million in funding for projects throughout the state, including $600,000 for the integration of the Montana Offender Notification and Tracking System (MONTS) into the Montana Juvenile Justice System.  Funding was included by the House Commerce, Justice and Science Subcommittee for Fiscal Year 2010.

“MONTS has been tremendously successful in helping the state of Montana track adult offenders,” said Rehberg, a member of the House Appropriations Committee. “I’m pleased that the federal funding I have secured will help expand the program to Montana’s overburdened juvenile justice system.”

MONTS addresses the need in Montana for an electronic monitoring and automated notification program to help reduce the number of incarcerated youth and to increase the effectiveness of probation/parole programs.  Through a partnership between the Montana Youth and District Court Services Bureau and AquilaVision Corporation MONTS will provide device leases, program implementation, and training for active GPS monitoring systems and active alcohol monitoring units throughout the State of Montana.  Ultimately, the project will help divert youth from costly incarceration.

Throughout the nation electronic monitoring programs are being successfully implemented in Youth Court Systems to increase accountability and program effectiveness while reducing incarceration and recidivism rates.

“Keeping kids out of jail not only saves money in the short-term, but helps avert some of the long-term consequences that incarceration can have on a juvenile,” said Rehberg.  “Spending this money now will save the state much more down the road.”
