WASHINGTON, DC - Montana's Congressman, Denny Rehberg, today met with Montana Secretary of State Brad Johnson to discuss increased federal funding, through the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), for improved voting systems in Montana.
“The right of the American people to choose their leaders is a unique and treasured freedom,” said Rehberg a member of the House Financial Services Appropriations Subcommittee. “We need to protect and uphold America’s electoral process to ensure those elected represent the true will of the American people. I will continue to urge the Senate to follow suit by passing this essential funding for HAVA.”
HAVA was enacted in 2002 by President Bush. The legislation provides funds to the states for the purchase and upgrading of voting and registration equipment. HAVA also sets minimum standards for states to follow in key areas of election administration, such as requiring proper voter identification and making it easier for military absentee voting. Earlier this year, Rehberg and House colleagues included $300 million for HAVA in the Financial Services Appropriations bill.
“Congressman Rehberg’s support of the funding for HAVA has been critically important,” said Secretary of State Brad Johnson. “This funding has a significant impact on the elections in counties across Montana.”
“America absolutely sets the standard around the world when it comes to fair and free elections,” said Rehberg. “With the advances in technology, it’s important the process is monitored, improved, and safe-guarded to ensure that everyone in America can play a part in the direction of this great democracy.”
