McIntyre Announces $2.25 Million in Funding for New Hanover and Brunswick Beach Projects

Ocean Isle Beach, Carolina Beach, and Kure Beach all receive additional federal funding

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre announced today that Ocean Isle Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach have all received additional federal funding for their upcoming shore protection projects.

These beaches are due for periodic renourishment this fall and received this funding as part of the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act of 2009 passed in November of 2008.   The following funding was provided:

    -$750,000 for Ocean Isle Beach

-$1,500,000 for Carolina Beach and Kure Beach

McIntyre, a member of the Congressional Coastal Caucus, stated, “This is truly a blessing for our beach communities!  Our beaches provide the strong foundation for a thriving economy and are a pristine natural resource for all to enjoy.  Funding for beach renourishment has become more and more challenging to secure in recent years, and I am so pleased these federal funds have come through!”

This funding contributes to the 65% federal share of each beach renourishment project and will be combined with the local sponsor share to cover construction costs.  Last year, Representative McIntyre was able to secure $9 million in federal funding for upcoming beach renourishment projects.   In addition, $2.6 million in funding is currently pending in the U.S. Congress awaiting enactment of the Fiscal 2010 Energy and Water Appropriations bill.
