    Lumbee Bill Passes U.S. House

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre announced today that the U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation granting the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina federal recognition.

Congressman McIntyre stated, “Today’s vote was one for fairness, justice, and long over-due recognition for the Lumbee Indians.  For over 121 years, the Lumbees have been seeking the rightful designation, and today the House has helped the Tribe move forward in this effort.  I am very grateful for all of my colleagues support in this measure.  We will keep working toward enactment of this bill.”

The vote on the floor of the U.S. House was 240-179

The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
