(Washington, D.C.) – Last night, Rep. Sue Myrick (NC-9) voted for the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act, or CIANA. This legislation would make it a federal offense to transport a minor across state lines for an abortion in order to evade a parental notification law. It would also require a doctor to notify a minor's parent before performing an abortion, if that girl is a resident of another state.
“This bill protects the rights of parents to be involved in the medical decisions of their daughters,” said Rep. Myrick. “It will also protect frightened and confused adolescent girls from being coerced by abusive boyfriends, or older men, to have a secret out-of-state abortion to evade parental involvement laws.”
Many states require parental notification or consent before an abortion procedure, others do not. Instances of non-parents transporting young women across state lines for the purpose of evading the parental involvement laws in the girl’s home state are prevalent and dangerous. The bill passed the House by a vote of 270-157.
