REP. MYRICK VOTES TO KILL THE DEATH TAX

(Washington, D.C.) – Rep. Sue Myrick (NC-9) today voted for H.R. 8, which  permanently ends the Death Tax.  The Death Tax hurts families because it forces them to sell the family farm or business to pay the taxes.

“Death should not be a taxable event.  Americans work hard their whole lives and pay taxes.  Death is not a time where the government should approach families with their hand held out asking for more,” said Myrick.

The Death Tax was set to phase out in 2010 under the 2001 tax relief package.  However, without this bill, the Death Tax would have re-emerged to its pre-2001 levels on January 1, 2011.

Before the 2001 tax relief package, many small businesses and family farms had to pay as much as a 55% tax when the owner died and the estate was passed on to his or her heirs.  This caused many families to sell the business or the farm in order to pay the Death Taxes demanded by the government.

The permanent repeal of the Death Tax simplifies tax laws, and allows taxpayers to make long-term financial planning decisions that help American families.  The bill passed the House by a vote of 272-162.
