REP. MYRICK VOTES TO RESTORE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

(Washington, D.C.) – Rep. Sue Myrick (NC-9) voted today for S. 397, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.  This bill would provide protection for those in the firearms industry from lawsuits arising out of the criminal or unlawful acts of people who criminally or unlawfully misuse their products.

“Allowing lawsuits like this is like allowing someone to sue a car manufacturer for getting into an accident after driving drunk.  Today, more than ever, people need to take personal responsibility for their actions, and that is why I support this bill,” said Myrick.

The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act will preserve access to a supply of firearms and ammunition for all lawful purposes, including hunting, self-defense, collecting, and competitive or recreational shooting.  It does not violate the right of citizens to bear arms.  It simply prevents manufacturers from being sued by those seeking jackpot justice.  It does allow lawsuits against gun manufacturers in cases where criminal activity, or misuse of their products, doesn’t take place.

The Lawful Commerce in Arms Act has now passed both the House and Senate and will now go to the President’s desk for his signature.
