CBC Cautions on Miers Nomination to Supreme Court; Urges Transparency in Record and Views

(Washington, D.C.)- U.S. Representative Melvin L. Watt (D-NC), Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, today released the following statement on the nomination of Harriet Miers to the U.S. Supreme Court:

“The Congressional Black Caucus congratulates Harriet Miers on her nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, the third woman ever nominated to the highest court in the land.

“We urge the Senate and the American people not to rush to judgment on Ms. Miers’ nomination, but to evaluate her record and views carefully.  The Supreme Court has played a critical role in reaffirming the constitutional protections guaranteed to every citizen of the United States and has served as the place of last resort for African Americans in the judicial arena.

“We need a careful analysis of Ms. Miers’ legal record and her work in the Bush Administration.  The CBC urges her to be forthcoming regarding her views during the nomination process.”
