Washington, D.C.- Today, U.S. Representative Melvin L. Watt (D-NC), Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), released the following statement regarding the death of C. DeLores Tucker: "The Congressional Black Caucus extends its sincere condolences to the family of C. DeLores Tucker, the first African American female to serve as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of State. Ms. Tucker was a longtime activist who worked tirelessly for civil rights and parity for women in American politics. In 1985, she led the founding of the National Political Congress of Black Women, which is currently known as the National Caucus of Black Women. In recent years, Ms. Tucker was best known for her campaigns against rap and hip-hop music that contained misogynistic lyrics and depicted violence against women. She set a standard of leadership that women everywhere can be proud of. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family." (####) |
