(Washington, D.C.)- U.S. Representative Melvin L. Watt (D-N.C.), Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), issued the following statement regarding Pat Robertson’s call to assassinate Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela. “The CBC condemns in the strongest possible terms the statement of Pat Robertson calling for the assassination of President Chavez, as well as the proposal itself. The idea that anyone, much less someone calling himself a Christian servant of God, would think or express such a proposal suggests that he has lost touch with reality and has lost his religious bearings. The arrogance his statement exemplifies is exactly the kind of arrogance that leads people around the world to regard the United States and its citizens with contempt and this, in our opinion, can only lead to increased risks of and exposure to terrorism. We call on the President and all our elected leaders to renounce his statement and the proposal immediately and in the sharpest terms.” ### |
