CBC Chair Urges Economic Consequences for Bennett Comments

(Washington, D.C.)- Representative Melvin L. Watt (D-N.C.), Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), issued the following comments on behalf of the CBC about former Republican Secretary of Education William Bennett’s comments on his radio show in which he said, “…you could abort every black baby in this country and your crime rate would go down.  That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down.”

“The first inclination is not to dignify William Bennett’s comments with a response.  However, it is obvious that these kinds of outrageous comments will continue unless there are economic consequences to those who make them.  I, therefore, call on all radio station owners who carry Bill Bennett’s show to immediately terminate the show and if they fail to do so, I call on his sponsors and advertisers to withdraw their advertising dollars.”
