(Washington, D.C.)- Today, U.S. Representative Melvin L. Watt (D-NC), Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), released the following statement regarding the death of Judge Constance Baker Motley: "The Congressional Black Caucus extends its sincere condolences to the family of Judge Constance Baker Motley, the first African American female U.S. federal judge. During her extraordinary career, Judge Motley was one of the civil rights luminaries who worked on many of the landmark cases that ended segregation and established equal rights for African Americans. She served as an exemplary judge and is the type of jurist that Americans should expect and demand on our courts. She set a sterling standard of civility and leadership that all members of the CBC are challenged to meet every day. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family." (####) |
