CBC Chair Comments on the Death of Acclaimed
Photographer, Filmmaker and Renaissance Man Gordon Parks

(Washington, D.C.) - Today, U.S. Representative Melvin L. Watt (D-NC), Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), released the following statement on the death of Gordon Parks:

"Gordon Parks inspired a generation of fans with his photography, music, movies, poetry and writings. He was best known for his photo essays on the effects of poverty in the United States and abroad and on the civil rights movement.

“He was the first African American staff photographer for Life Magazine and Vogue, and the first to write, direct and score a Hollywood film, “The Learning Tree.”  He also directed the hit movie “Shaft.”

“The Congressional Black Caucus extends its sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Parks. May God bless them all."
