| (Washington, D.C.)- In an effort to dramatize the urgency of the crisis in Darfur, including the continuing genocide and the plight of millions of people who have been displaced by violence in Sudan, U.S. Representatives Melvin L. Watt (D-NC), Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-MI), Al Green (D-TX), Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO), Danny Davis (IL), John Lewis (D-GA) and D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will participate in a press conference and stage a peaceful demonstration in front of the Sudanese Embassy on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 10 a.m.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Institute for Policy Studies, TransAfrica Forum, Rainbow Push and members of the clergy will also participate. To date, an estimated 450,000 Sudanese have died since the beginning of the genocide in 2003. More than 2.5 million Sudanese have been displaced from their homes and 3.5 million people are currently in need emergency humanitarian assistance as a result of the crisis orchestrated by the Government of Sudan and its allied Janjaweed militias.
