PALLONE VOICES DISAPPOINTMENT OVER BRAC COMMISSION'S UNUSUAL VERDICT ON FORT MONMOUTH

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), co-chairman of the Save Our Fort Committee, issued the following statement today after the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) voted to close Fort Monmouth unless such a closure would disrupt the war on terror.

"I'm disappointed the BRAC Commission voted to close Fort Monmouth after admitting that such action deviates from the Pentagon's own criteria.  It's clear the Commission agreed with the arguments we made, and I believe that's why they included an unusual provision that would keep the Fort open if closure would lead to a disruption in the war on terror.   I do not like this supposed compromise, but I think it clearly shows that our arguments resonated with the commissioners.

"I have long believed that closing Fort Monmouth would seriously impact our military efforts abroad, and find it difficult to believe that the Pentagon will be able to prove otherwise.

"The fight to save the Fort is not over.  We will prove that the Pentagon cannot close Fort Monmouth under the guidelines agreed to by the commissioners today.  We continue to have a strong case, and over the coming days we will plan our next move to save Fort Monmouth."
