Pelosi Appoints Payne to Leadership Post

Newly elected Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi has appointed Tenth District Congressman Donald M. Payne to the powerful Democratic Steering Committee, the arm of the House leadership responsible for determining individual committee assignments for Democratic members.  Payne was one of 15 members selected by Congresswoman Pelosi for the leadership assignment.

Payne, who has been actively involved in legislative and political issues, said that he is looking forward to serving in the organization.  “I am honored that the Democratic Leadership selected me to serve on this key committee,” Payne said.  “I am especially enthusiastic that in my conversations with Democratic Leader Pelosi, she indicated her plans to expand the mission of the Steering Committee to give our membership an active role in shaping the legislative agenda of the 108th Congress.”

Payne was the only New Jersey member of Congress appointed by Pelosi.
“It will benefit New Jersey to be represented on such a prestigious committee,” Payne said.  “I will be working hard to see that the interests of my state and district are well represented as the new Congress convenes.”

Payne was recently elected Chairman of the Essex County Democratic Committee.  He serves on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on International Relations, where he is the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Africa.  A former Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, he also serves as an At-Large Whip in the Democratic Leadership and has served as a member of the House Democratic Leadership Advisory Group.
