Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald M. Payne applauded President Obama’s 10-year budget outline, which was released today. The budget is an honest assessment of the challenges facing our nation, no longer hiding costs like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also makes the tough choices necessary to restore fiscal responsibility and begin reducing the deficit, while making critical investments in health care, energy, and education to put our economy on strong footing for the future. “President Obama’s budget meets the challenges facing our nation head-on,” Payne said. “This is a budget that makes tough choices to strengthen our economy and restore fiscal responsibility.” “I’m pleased that the President has presented an honest budget, putting an end to years of masking the costs of things we have to pay for, like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Payne. “Years of fiscal irresponsibility have created record deficits, and I am committed to working with the President to achieve his goal of cutting the deficit in half by 2012 so that we do not pass our debt on to our children.” “While we are making hard choices to reduce the deficit and return to a fiscally sustainable path, this budget also makes critical investments to ensure that our economy stays strong for years to come,” said Payne. “We are making a down payment on health care reform to provide affordable and accessible health care, investing in clean energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and expanding access to early and higher education so that our nation can stay competitive in the 21st century economy.” “President Obama’s budget will help our economy recover and get our nation back on track,” Payne concluded. ### |
