| Payne Announces Economic Stimulus Money for Local Community Health Centers | |||
|
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald M. Payne today announced that the US Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $1,007,663 in grants, to community health centers in Newark and Jersey City. The funds, entitled Increased Demand for Services (IDS) grants, will be distributed to 1,128 federally qualified health center grantees. Health centers will use the funds over the next two years to create or retain approximately 6,400 health center jobs. The IDS awards are the second set of health center grants provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment. On March 2, President Obama announced grants worth $155 million to establish 126 new health centers. Those grants will provide access to health center care for 750,000 people in 39 states and two territories. "Nearly 50 million people in the United States do not have health insurance," Payne asserted. "As people lose their jobs, that number is expected to rise. These community health centers are going to be the first-line of defense for millions of Americans who are without health insurance. The IDS grants will financially support these centers allowing Americans to receive health care and to help many keep their jobs." |
