Remembering Victims of the Holocaust

Washington, D.C. – Tenth District Congressman Donald Payne, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health, was one of three members of the House of Representatives selected to serve as a candle lighter for the Annual Days of Remembrance Commemoration in the United States Capitol on April 23, 2009.  The event was organized by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Congressman Payne was accompanied at the candle lighting ceremony by New Jersey Holocaust survivor Lucy Pantirer and Polish rescuer Anna Bando.  Payne said, "On this solemn occasion, we honor the six million lives that were lost during the horrific years of the Holocaust. We also pay tribute to the courageous survivors and rescuers who continue to share their stories with us in the hope that we will forever end the tragedy of genocide."

Payne, who pushed a resolution through Congress condemning genocide in Darfur, also expressed gratitude to all of those who have joined in the effort to end the tragedy there.  "An amazing coalition of committed religious and community groups have come together to support the people of Darfur and to end their suffering," Payne said.  "By raising our collective voices, we will make a difference.  We cannot stand by and allow this human tragedy to continue."

President Barack Obama was the keynote speaker at the ceremony. The theme of the event was "Never Again: What You Do Matters."
