Payne Announces Grant for Seton Hall University

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald M. Payne today announced that the US Department of Education has awarded an Emergency Management for Higher Education grant of $536,009 to Seton Hall University.

Emergency Management for Higher Education grants assist institutions of higher education as they review, improve and institutionalize their emergency management planning efforts.  The phases of emergency management includes reviewing and enhancing current plans; training university staff and faculty in emergency management procedures; ensuring coordination of planning and communications across departments within the institution; collaborating with local and/or State government and emergency management efforts; developing a written plan that incorporates medical, communication and transportation needs of those with disabilities and special needs into emergency protocols; and developing a written plan that prepares the institution of higher education for a possible infectious disease outbreak.

Seton Hall University is only 14 miles from New York City and many areas of critical infrastructure including seaports, international airports and military installations.  The Emergency Management for Higher Education grant will be used to improve the university's incident management plan, train campus stakeholders, enhance systems to indentify students at risk of committing violence, and developing written plans for person with special needs.

"With Seton Hall University's close proximity to New York City, it is vital that its emergency response protocols are up to par," Payne stated.  "This grant will help the university to stay up-to-date with the necessary tools needed for an institution located in a critical metropolitan area.  I'm glad we were able to secure this funding for the school."
