Payne Excited About 2011 NCAA Tournament Coming to Newark

Washington, D.C. – Tenth District Representative Donald M. Payne, enthusiastically welcomed the news today that for the first time in history, his hometown of Newark will serve as one of the four regional sites for the 2011 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.  Prudential Center, in the heart of downtown, will be the venue of the Eastern Regionals from March 25 – 27, 2011.  "This is very exciting news for the city of Newark and my alma mater, Seton Hall University, which will serve as the host institution," Payne said.

Major sporting events, such as NCAA March Madness, are economic boons for host cities.  Newark and its business will see increased traffic and economic activity from the thousands of people coming to visit the city.  This will translate into job creation and a boost in revenue for local shops, hotels, restaurants, and more.

"Seton Hall is an illustrious university that, for over 150 years, has been serving Newark and its surrounding communities," Payne stated.  "The 2011 Eastern Regionals will be a great opportunity for the university.  It's a great honor for the school and they deserve this recognition.  I'm very proud of my alma mater. I'm also excited about the opportunity to showcase Prudential Center as well as all of the other attractions Newark has to offer."

"Newark, in recent years, has experienced an economic resurgence," Payne added.  "The coming of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament is another feather in the cap of the city.  It will create jobs and other economic opportunities for Newark businesses and residents."
