(Washington, DC) - (Washington, D.C.) – Rep. Gary L. Ackerman (D-Queens/L.I.) today cosponsored legislation to establish a Select Committee on POW and MIA Affairs in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Select Committee’s mission would be to account for each military serviceman or woman from the Vietnam Era, the Korean conflict, World War II, Cold War missions or the Gulf War, including all POWs and MIAs from these conflicts.
“When an American makes a commitment to the armed services, the government in turn makes a commitment to them. These men and women exhibit extraordinary courage and sacrifice. This attempt to get to the truth is the very least we owe these patriotic Americans and their long-grieving families,” said Ackerman.
The Committee would be composed of ten members of the House, selected by the Speaker, and would conduct an extensive investigation and report its findings on the fate of America’s POWs and MIAs. Over 88,000 American military personnel are still unaccounted for from military conflicts during the 20th century.
