(Washington, DC) - Gary L. Ackerman (D-Queens/ L.I..), along with members of the New York delegation, today urged Governor Spitzer to ensure the continued operation of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program. With over 200 after-school programs falling under the auspices of the CCLC, a cut in funding would affect thousands of students across the state.
The letter makes a simple request to continue after-school programs until federal funding resumes next year. “Congressional appropriations committees have approved increases for these programs for Fiscal Year 2008. Unfortunately, there will still be a gap in funding between now and the start of FY 2008, and I urge Governor Spitzer to provide emergency funding during the gap period to ensure that these programs that are so vital to our communities continue" said Ackerman and his colleagues.
Numerous studies confirm that after-school programs reduce crime and drug use, keep children safe and improve academic performance. Over 34,000 children participate in CCLC, which is staffed by over 3,400 New Yorkers. By allocating $30 million in emergency funding to these programs, NYS can ensure their continued operation until federal funds take effect.
