Ackerman Urges Queens Residents & Business Owners to Apply for Federal Disaster Assistance for Damage Sustained During August Storms

(Washington, DC) - U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-Queens/L.I.) today urged residents and business owners in Queens whose properties were damaged by the severe storms that ripped through the borough on August 8, to apply for disaster assistance the federal government is making available to help affected individuals get back on their feet.

On Friday, President Bush signed a major disaster declaration for Queens which allows homeowners, renters and business owners to seek financial help for property that was damaged or destroyed by the weather.

The funds, to be coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), include relief for temporary housing, home repairs and low-interest loans.

Those who sustained losses can apply for assistance by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or going online at www.fema.gov. The toll-free telephone number will operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday thru Sunday. Individuals needing help with the process can contact Congressman Ackerman’s office at 718-423-2154.

Officials estimate that approximately 1300 homes sustained damage from the storms.
